The country I chose to do my WIKI on is New Zealand. I am interested in this country because I was born there. New Zealand is located in the southern hemisphere in the south Pacific Ocean. It is made up of two islands, north and south. It is separated from Australia by the Tasmanian Sea. The capital city of New Zealand is Wellington. The other major cities are AUkland, Dunedin, and Christchurch. New Zealand has a population of 3.5 million people and 10 million sheep. The native people of New Zealand are Maori. There are many things about New Zealand that I would like to learn about. Number one: Whakatane, where I was born. Number two: Mount Ruapehu, the volacano that erupted in 1996 and, Number Three: Maori Culture.

Mount Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu is an active volcano at the south end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone . it is 23 kilometres north east of Ohakune , 40 kilometres south west of lake Taupo in the national park of Tongariro. Mount Ruapehu is the most active volcano in the world . it also has three major peeks Tahurangi (2,797 m), Te Heuheu (2,755 m) and Paretetaitonga (2,751 m).

Maori culture

The Maoris are the natives of New Zealand just like the natives we have here in Canada BC. There are over 500,000 natives to this day the about 15% of New Zealand’s population. The Maoris came to New Zealand around 1200 ad from the Cook Islands. Their ancestors set out from a place in Polynesia fleet of the large canoes. Before the arrival of the European colonists in the late 18-century the Maoris settled through out New Zealand. In 1841 New Zealand became the colony of Brittan. Many European settlements were constructed. this was some where between 1843 and 1872 then violents eroced between Maoris and Europeans thus producing war
This war is kown as the great war of New Zealand . just after the war took place the Maoris lands were confiscated illegally and during this time the Maori population declined rapidly as a result of the wars and European diseases. Today the Maoris have adapted well to the environment just like us today. maoris_rotorua_h014.jpg
